MODERN DELHI

The Battle of Patparganj in 1803 marked the beginning of British dominance in Delhi paving way for some major historical events. The legacy of this period is still evident in the city's diverse cultural and architectural heritage. Indian freedom and partition in 1947 and the installation of the government and bureaucratic machinery in Delhi resulted in unprecedented demographic and urban churning; giving it a unique political and national character. Post-liberalization it transformed itself to a trans-national, commercial and multi-cultural plurality as class, regional, global, professional and housing mobilities grouped themselves in a diverse as well as disparate megalopolis.
