WHAT IS DELHI DIVER-CITY?
The city of Delhi has a history spanning from its first avatar as Indraprastha to the latest millennium city in the form of a sprawling conurbation- the Delhi NCR as it is today widely known today. It is a city which has risen again and again like a phoenix to pass on from the legendary city of Indraprastha through the Gupta and Maurya period to emerge again in the times of Tomars and Chauhanas to be made the capital of the Turkish, Mughal and British empires to finally emerge as the capital of Independent India. It is not just the seat of political capital of the largest democracy of the world but is also a commercial centre of a promising economy as well as a cultural centre which visually and materially encapsulates a very long and rich tradition of composite culture. The definition of culture has moved beyond monuments and performing arts and culture is seen embedded in the complex inter-relationship of spaces, people, materials and practices. Such a city deserves an independent identity in the form of an encyclopaedic resource which showcases its history, urban development, architecture, heritage, culture, lived experience, literature, cinema, economy, governance and environment. The city in itself is a living compendium showcasing its ever-evolving urban dynamics and thus its repository of resources merit development in as comprehensive and extensive a manner as befits a glorious and ancient city like this. The idea behind this project is to take the city to the people through a virtual compendium where scholars and citizens across the globe can explore and absorb Delhi in all its diverse facets.
ABOUT US
Delhi as a city has witnessed amalgamation of many urban idioms that have developed over a millennium. With changing course of history, Delhi’s lived space has molded itself in response to its rulers and many other dynamics. This ICSSR Sponsored Major project aims to bring varied facets of Delhi under one roof in the form a virtual encyclopedic resource. Over the years, the role of a compendium has expanded and evolved from a space for display of unique historical objects to providing multi-sensory experiential learning. The most recent addition to this new category of museums is the idea of Virtual City Archive Projects (VCAP). Delhi Diver-city is dedicated to documenting, presenting, promoting and contemplating the city of Delhi through canonical and non-canonical, traditional and technological and academic and crowd-sourced resources and narratives spanning various mediums.
